Wheel Balancing: What Is It?

Wheel balancing corrects uneven weight distribution around the wheel and tyre assembly. Even a small imbalance — as little as 5 grams — can cause vibration, uneven tyre wear, and premature wear of suspension and steering components. During balancing, a technician mounts the wheel on a computerised balancing machine that spins the wheel and identifies where small weights need to be added to achieve perfect balance.

Signs You Need Wheel Balancing

• Vibration felt through the steering wheel, floor, or seat
• Uneven or scalloped tyre wear
• Poor fuel economy
• Vibration that worsens at certain speeds (usually 50–70mph)

Wheel Alignment: What Is It?

Wheel alignment (also called tracking) adjusts the angles of the wheels so they're parallel to each other and perpendicular to the road. Misalignment causes tyres to scrub sideways as the vehicle moves, wearing them down rapidly and affecting handling. Common causes of misalignment include hitting potholes, kerb strikes, and worn suspension components — all common on Leeds's urban roads.

• Vehicle pulls to one side when driving straight
• Steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight
• Rapid or uneven tyre wear on one edge
• Squealing tyres when turning
