The 5-Minute Tyre Safety Check

The charity TyreSafe recommends the ACT check: Air pressure, Condition, Tread. Run through these checks monthly and you'll catch most tyre problems before they become dangerous or expensive.

Step 1: Check Tyre Pressure

Use a reliable tyre pressure gauge (digital gauges are most accurate). Check when tyres are cold — before driving, or at least 2 hours after. Compare readings against your vehicle's recommended pressures (found on the door jamb sticker or fuel cap). Inflate or deflate as needed.

Step 2: Check Tyre Condition

Walk around your vehicle and visually inspect each tyre including the spare. Look for:

• Cuts, gashes, or embedded objects (nails, screws, glass)
• Bulges or lumps in the sidewall (replace immediately)
• Cracking in the tread or sidewall rubber
• Uneven wear patterns (may indicate alignment or suspension issues)

Step 3: Check Tread Depth

Use the 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread may be below 3mm and approaching the legal limit. Test multiple points around the tyre and across its width. For a more accurate reading, use a dedicated tread depth gauge (available from any auto parts shop for under £5).

Step 4: Check Valve Caps

Ensure all four valve caps are present and tight. Missing caps allow dirt into the valve, which can cause slow pressure loss.
