Tyre Pressure Guide for Leeds Drivers: Get It Right Every Time
Incorrect tyre pressure is one of the most common — and most avoidable — causes of tyre failure in the UK. Here's everything you need to know to keep your tyres properly inflated.
Why Tyre Pressure Matters
Correct tyre pressure affects your safety, fuel economy, tyre wear, and handling. Underinflated tyres flex excessively, build up heat, wear out faster, and dramatically increase stopping distances. Overinflated tyres have a reduced contact patch, making the vehicle feel skittish and increasing the risk of punctures from road debris.
How to Find Your Correct Tyre Pressure
Your vehicle's recommended tyre pressure is found in:
- The driver's door jamb sticker
- Your fuel filler cap
- The vehicle owner's manual
Note that front and rear pressures are often different, and many manufacturers also recommend different pressures when carrying a full load. Pressures are typically listed in PSI (pounds per square inch) or BAR.
How Often Should You Check?
We recommend checking tyre pressure at least once a month and always before a long motorway journey. Check when the tyres are cold — after driving, air inside the tyre expands and readings will be higher than actual cold pressure.
TPMS: Your Car's Built-In Warning System
Most vehicles manufactured after 2014 are fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). If the warning light illuminates on your dashboard, check your pressures immediately. However, TPMS typically only alerts you when pressure drops more than 25% — which is already significantly underinflated and potentially unsafe.
Seasonal Pressure Changes
Temperature affects tyre pressure. For every 10°C drop in temperature, tyre pressure drops by approximately 1 PSI. During Leeds winters, it's especially important to check pressures more frequently.
