Puncture Repair or New Tyre: How Do You Decide?
Not every puncture needs a new tyre — but some definitely do. Here's how to know which option is right for your situation and what the repair rules say.
British Standard for Tyre Repairs (BS AU 159)
In the UK, tyre repairs must comply with British Standard BS AU 159. This sets strict rules about when a puncture can be repaired and when replacement is necessary. Our technicians follow these standards on every job.
When a Puncture CAN Be Repaired
A tyre can be repaired if ALL of the following conditions are met:
- The puncture is in the central tread area (not the shoulder or sidewall)
- The puncture hole is 6mm diameter or less
- The tyre has not been run while significantly underinflated or completely flat
- There is no secondary damage to the tyre structure
- Tread depth is sufficient (above 1.6mm, ideally 2mm+)
When You Need a New Tyre
- Puncture is in the shoulder or sidewall — never repairable
- Puncture diameter exceeds 6mm
- The tyre has been driven on while flat (even briefly) — internal damage likely
- Multiple repairs already exist in the tyre
- Tyre is a run flat — cannot be repaired after being driven on flat
- Significant cracking, bubbling, or tread separation
DIY Tyre Foam Sealants
Tyre foam/sealant products can temporarily seal a small puncture, but they contaminate the inside of the tyre and often make professional repair or balancing impossible. If you use sealant as an emergency measure, tell us when you call — the tyre will likely need replacing rather than repairing.
