How to Read Tyre Sidewall Markings: A Simple Breakdown

Breaking Down a Tyre Size

Let's decode a common tyre marking: 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205: Tyre width in millimetres (across the tread face)
  • 55: Aspect ratio — sidewall height as a percentage of tyre width (55% of 205mm = 112.75mm)
  • R: Radial construction (virtually all modern tyres are radial)
  • 16: Rim diameter in inches
  • 91: Load index — maximum load the tyre can carry (91 = 615kg per tyre)
  • V: Speed rating — maximum sustained speed (V = 149mph / 240kph)

Load Index: Why It Matters

Never fit a tyre with a lower load index than specified by your vehicle manufacturer. Exceeding the tyre's load capacity is dangerous and could void your insurance. This is especially important for van and commercial vehicle operators in Leeds who regularly carry heavy loads.

Speed Rating Guide

  • T = 118mph (common on budget economy cars)
  • H = 130mph
  • V = 149mph (common on mid-range vehicles)
  • W = 168mph (performance vehicles)
  • Y = 186mph (sports cars)

Other Important Markings

  • M+S: Mud and Snow — not the same as a proper winter tyre
  • 3PMSF (snowflake symbol): Meets winter tyre performance standards
  • RF or RFT: Run Flat Tyre
  • DOT + 4 digit code: Date of manufacture (week/year)
